Extractions

Our dentists make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, extractions are necessary when decay has made the tooth unsalvageable or when you have an advanced periodontal disease. When a tooth is malformed, damaged, impacted or ingrown, different procedures are used, but all extractions are considered surgery. Depending on which tooth is removed, we can offer you a replacement in the form of a dental implant or oral prosthetic.

FAQ

Do I need my tooth extracted?

There are times where a tooth becomes so compromised that it affects its foundation or that of other teeth. Where it be due to bone loss, a subgingival fracture, chronic infection, rampant decay, or unfavorable eruption keeping such teeth can lead to further systemic harm.

What should I expect during an extraction procedure?

  1. Medical history and radiographs are reviewed among the patient and treating dentist to verify the extraction is needed.
  2. The tooth is anesthetized locally.
  3. Once numbness around the tooth is achieved then the tooth is elevated out of the gums.
  4. Any infected tissue is removed and depending on the case some sutures and or healing materials are placed.
  5. Bleeding is controlled and postoperative instructions are given to the patient.
  6. A follow up is scheduled withing the week to verify proper healing.

How long is the healing process?

The healing process can vary between patients depending on the procedure and medical history but the crucial healing process takes place between the first 3-5 days after the extraction. During this time the site is at most risk for a "Dry Socket" where the clot doesn't completely form at the extraction site and delays healing. It is because of this that your dentist may recommend: limited cardio, smoking, drinking out of straws and brushing the area. If you experience worsening pain or sensitivity after the initial healing period then please do not hesitate to contact your dentist.

That being said, with proper care and follow up most extractions heal well on their own.
